College of San Mateo (CSM) is pleased to announce the selection of Alex Guiriba (he/him/siya) as its next Vice President of Student Services. A proud CSM alumnus and the son of Filipinx immigrants, Alex has deep roots in the San Mateo County community and a strong commitment to advancing equity and student success.
Alex began his career at CSM in 2006 as a staff member, faculty member, and administrator. During his tenure, he developed impactful programs, including the Student Ambassador program and Connect to College, and co-founded the Katipunan Filipinx Learning Community. His leadership has fostered student engagement and established meaningful pathways for historically excluded communities. He has served as the College’s Interim Vice President of Student Services since September 2023.
Most recently, Alex served as Dean of Student Affairs at City College of San Francisco, where he supported the Free City College program, led efforts that increased enrollment of San Francisco Unified School District students by 39 percent, and supervised resource centers for Undocumented, LGBTQIA+, and Veteran students. His work reflects a commitment to fostering collaboration between student services and academic affairs to provide holistic student support.
Alex holds an associate degree from CSM, a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master’s degree from San José State University. He is pursuing a doctorate at San Francisco State University, with research on equity and social justice. He also serves as president of the Filipinx Community College Collaborative, championing equity-focused leadership and representation within higher education.
Alex’s appointment as CSM’s first Filipinx Vice President of Student Services is a milestone for the College, embodying its mission to promote inclusivity, opportunity, and student achievement. His CSM student experience and visionary leadership align seamlessly with the College’s values, positioning him to lead this pivotal role.
