The Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program at College of San Mateo (CSM) recently brought students to the 2024 National Diversity in STEM (NDiSTEM) Conference hosted by the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) in Phoenix, Arizona. Led by MESA Retention Specialist Jessica Macias, CSM students Daniela Ruiz, Rahul Vishwahad, Alexandra Garcia-Godos, and Maryuri Aguilar joined thousands of attendees at one of the largest and most influential gatherings dedicated to diversity and inclusion in STEM.

The NDiSTEM Conference is a transformative experience that inspires students from historically excluded communities to overcome barriers and pursue advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The conference’s plenary speakers share powerful and relatable stories of persistence, setbacks, and triumphs, emphasizing the importance of mentorship, community, and resilience. Students leave with a resounding message: challenges can become stepping stones to success, and representation matters at every level of STEM.

A highlight of the conference was the bustling Exhibit Hall, where students networked with professionals from universities, research programs, and companies nationwide. CSM students Alexandra Garcia-Godos and Rahul Vishwahad had the opportunity to present their research projects, which were conducted through internships at Stanford University’s Community College Outreach Program (CCOP) in partnership with CSM MESA. Their presentations attracted professionals and judges within their disciplines, who offered valuable feedback and encouragement.

Throughout the conference, students participated in engaging workshops and discussions that covered practical and personal aspects of navigating STEM pathways. From building resilience to managing challenging situations in graduate school and professional environments, sessions provided actionable strategies and insights. Students also explored diverse career options, learning about emerging fields and interdisciplinary opportunities that could shape their futures.

Cultural celebrations added a dynamic layer to the event, reminding attendees that identity and diversity are integral to the STEM community. From an energizing mariachi procession to an intertribal Pow Wow, NDiSTEM embraced a rich tapestry of cultures and experiences.

Jessica Macias, CSM’s MESA Retention Specialist, highlighted the profound impact the event had on students, explaining how it opened doors and fostered a sense of connection: “The NDiSTEM Conference not only opened doors to opportunities for our students but also reminded them of the power of representation and belonging in STEM. Watching them connect with professionals, explore their passions, and gain confidence in their journeys was truly inspiring.”

CSM MESA student Daniela Ruiz also shared her thoughts, reflecting on how the conference reinforced the importance of community and representation in STEM. She said, “An impression the SACNAS conference has left me is the importance of community and how each member is supportive, specifically Latinos/a and Indigenous people in STEM. The conference inspired me to echar ganas by seeing people with similar backgrounds in these majors, careers, and goals.”

The NDiSTEM Conference impacted CSM’s MESA students, equipping them with new tools, connections, and inspiration. They returned to campus motivated to push boundaries, foster inclusive communities, and pursue their dreams in STEM fields—ready to lead and represent the next generation of diverse STEM professionals.
